Voroklini to Gain Green BeachThe Yiannathes beach of Voroklini – part of the Larnaka district – is the latest beach to be approved for an eco-initiative entitled ‘Greening Cyprus Beaches’, and the third on the island to be selected.

The CTO, Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) and Travel Foundation (a UK sustainable tourism charity), are focused on the future sustainability of Cyprus’ beaches. The Larnaka Tourism Board, Voroklini Community Council and the hoteliers of the area have undertaken the greening of Yiannathes under this initiative.

The ‘green’ beach standards for Cyprus are divided into broad categories that cover sand and water quality, green facilities, noise pollution, local food and drink, sustainable transport, eco beach furnishings, vegetation and planting, public environmental information/education, and green signage. Yiannathes has already begun implementing the criteria required by providing traditional, locally made clay ashtrays, installing bins for general waste and recycling, and creating a bicycle parking area. By the end of the year, green areas with plants that are endemic to Cyprus will also be created.

The beach is already a Blue Flag holder and this additional initiative further confirms Larnaka’s coasts as some of the best in Europe.
