Monte-Carlo-(Monaco)The South of France has always been popular with the rich and famous, but it is not something they can keep to themselves. The beauty of the coastline, the towns and small villages are there for all to enjoy. With near perfect weather for much of the year, Monte-Carlo is a unique place that should not be missed. Just 21 kms from Nice and 110 km from St Tropez, it is the perfect spot to visit while on holiday.

Getting There

By far the best way to enter Monte Carlo is by road, although it is also accessible by sea and air. It is hidden away in a mountainous region beside the sea. As you approach along the coast road, perhaps by taking the exit at La Turbie, you will be stunned at the beauty of the views down to Monaco, Cap d’Ail and out across the azure blue Mediterranean sea. If you have booked your holiday through an agency such as Newmarket Holidays, you will be able to take your trip to Monte Carlo with them and not miss a moment of the journey. They will also arrange for you to visit some of the many special sights while there.

Monte Carlo Casino

Built by the same architect who designed the Paris Opera House, Charles Garnier, in 1893, the very opulence of the building will leave you in awe. As you approach the frontage, you will be struck by the beauty of the gardens and the fountains; all of which are floodlit at night. Walk up the grand steps into the atrium which is paved with marble and surrounded by huge onyx columns. This leads on to the Operas Hall which is decorated with gold and red and beautiful sculptures and bas-reliefs. Then of course there is the famous casino with its incredible stained glass windows, sculptures and paintings, where many fortunes have been lost and won.

The Oceanographic Museum

An intriguing place with a truly international reputation; companies such as Newmarket Holidays believe that no trip to Monte Carlo is complete without a visit. The museum has an amazing collection of marine fauna and is dedicated to oceanography and marine science. The aquarium contains some rare species of marine life and with 90 pools, they are able to exist in natural conditions. Visit the Shark Lagoon which is a pool measuring 450 cubic meters and features a wonderful coral reef and many extraordinary creatures who call it home.

The Monaco Cathedral

A very important building in Monte Carlo as it is the burial place of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, together with other past sovereigns. Built in 1875 with white stones brought from nearby La Turbie, it is a stunning Roman-Byzantine-style edifice with an incredible altarpiece which, according to specialists in the area such as Newmarket Holidays, dates back from 1500.

Also not to be missed are the Prince’s Palace with its 15th century frescoes and the yellow and gold Louis XVth lounge and Fort Antoine; an XVIII century fortress which is now regularly used as an outdoor theatre.

Monte Carlo – a truly wonderful place.
