General information
GPS coordinates: take off : 35°1’11” (35.0198)N; 33°33’38” (33.5606)E – Elevation : 277 m.  landing : 35°0’51” (35.0144)N; 33°33’32” (33.5591)E – Elevation : 168 m.

Take off: There are a couple of launch points on this hill though one (the nicer launch) has fallen into disrepair and the track to it is overgrown and would require 4×4 for access. The other is at UN control point 111 and so this is how we refer to it.

Landing: Clean landing field with few obstacles.

Going there: Take the ‘Avdellaro’ exit off the A3 North of Larnaca. Head for Avdellaro, there is a small cafe about 3 miles South of the hill and makes a good meeting point. Carry on past the cafe and ignore any further signs for Avdellaro. Eventually you will see the hill spread out in front of you, if you have 2 cars it is prudent to leave one in the compound to the left of the road at the bottom. Continue past the hill and admire it as you do so, go under the bridge and take the next track on the right. follow this track around to the left and then turn right and continue to the end loop. There are a few pot holes on this track and it’s quite steep for the final 50m but if my Galaxy can do it then most other cars will cope too!

The fifth season of excavations at the site of Ayios Tychonas-Klimonas completed The fifth season of excavations at the site of Ayios Tychonas-Klimonas completed

The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, announces that on the 4th of June 2016, the fifth season of excavations at the site of Ayios Tychonas-Klimonas in Lemesos District was completed. The excavations were directed by François Briois (EHESS) and Jean-Denis Vigne (CNRS- Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle).

This year’s investigations brought to light the remains of more than 20 round buildings with a diameter of between 3 and 6 meters. The buildings were constructed on small terraces, notched into a gentle slope facing the sea. The walls were built with earth and strengthened with wooden poles and the floors were often plastered. In most buildings large hearths were discovered, sometimes accompanied by a 30-50 kg millstone. These buildings were probably frequently reconstructed, as seen by the multiple layers of remains that were found, one above the other, on the terraces.

The buildings are situated around a circular, 10 meter communal building, that was excavated between 2011-2012. The building dates to between 11,200 and 10,600 years BP (Before Present). The surveys and excavations that have been conducted since, have shown that the village would have covered an area of at least half a hectare. This is the earliest known village in Cyprus, and is more than twenty centuries older than Khirokitia.

Large quantities of stone tools, stone vessels, stone and shell beads or pendants were also found. The animal bones indicate that domestic dogs and cats were already introduced to Cyprus, and that the villagers hunted a small Cypriot wild boar and birds. Intensive sieving provided strong evidence for the cultivation of emmer wheat: a primitive cereal introduced from the continent. At this time, the Ayios Tychonas-Klimonas villagers were hunter-cultivators who did not produce pottery.

The organization of the village, its architecture, the stone tools and the presence of agriculture and hunting are elements that are very similar to those that have already been identified in the early Pre-Pottery Neolithic Levant, between 11,500 and 10,500 years BP. This is the earliest manifestation of an agricultural and village way of life known to date, worldwide. Ayios Tychonas-Klimonas has demonstrated that, even though Cyprus was separated from the continent by more than 70 km of sea, the island was part of broader Near Eastern Neolithic developments.

The excavations were supported by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, the French School at Athens, the French Ministère des Affaires Etrangères et du Développement International, the CNRS, the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, the French Institute for Rescue Archaeological Research (INRAP) and the Ayios Tychonas Community Council.

Department of Antiquities on the mosaic pavement at LarnakaDepartment of Antiquities on the mosaic pavement at Larnaka

Following the publicity given to the discovery of a new mosaic floor in Larnaka town, the Department of Antiquities would like to provide to the media a photograph of part of the mosaic floor and inform you of the following:

The mosaic floor was revealed in Agios Neofytos Street in Larnaka during excavation work for the construction of the city’s sewage system. Archaeological research on the site is still ongoing and only part of the mosaic floor has been revealed. Even though the mosaic floor has only been partially excavated, and has yet to be conserved, a preliminary estimation would suggest that scenes of the Labours of Hercules are depicted and that it is dated to the Roman Period.

Written sources and inscriptions provide information that during the Roman period Ancient Kition played an important role in the establishment of Roman culture in Cyprus, however, up to this day Roman remains found in the city are very few. Therefore, the mosaic floor that came to light and the building it belongs to, provide important evidence for the development of the city during the Roman Period.

2016 excavation season at Chlorakas-Palloures completed2016 excavation season at Chlorakas-Palloures completed

The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, announces the completion of the second season of excavations at the Chalcolithic site of Chlorakas-Palloures. The excavations, directed by Dr Bleda Düring of Leiden University, are performed in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.

During the 2016 excavation season two small neighbourhoods of this 5.000 year-old site were investigated. In the north section of the area a large and monumental, well-built, domestic building was unearthed, with plastered interior and exterior surfaces. In the centre of the building a large mortar installation was found as well as a hearth measuring 2.5 meters across. Next to the building, other similar ones were identified.

In the south section of the area, a series of smaller round houses were excavated, measuring around 6-8 meters in diameter. This, however, was by no means the poorer quarter of the site. In this part of the settlement a number of copper artefacts were found – which are among a few known so far for the Chalcolithic period, as well as beautiful figurines.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the settlement at Chlorakas-Palloures was an important settlement in the Chalcolithic period, with access to high quality flint and picrolite (used for figurines), metal artefacts, and large well-built houses.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues new Travel Advice on Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues new Travel Advice on Turkey

Avoid non-essential travel to Turkey

Following the recent events (coup attempt on 15/07/2016) the unsettled situation in the country is not expected to be restored soon and further deterioration of the situation may follow. The Turkish government has declared the entire country in a state of emergency for a period of three months (from 21 of July 2016). In addition to that, after the recent terrorist bomb attacks and the violent incidents arising from the public demonstrations in several cities in Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) urges all Cypriot citizens who intend to travel to Turkey in the coming period to avoid doing so. The MFA also advises Cypriot citizens who may reside, visit or intent to visit the country, to avoid traveling to certain areas, if it’s not necessary, which are the epicenter of tensions due to the latest developments, such as Istanbul, Ankara, southeastern Turkey and areas near military installations.

Furthermore, the country, after the continuous bomb attacks in its territory over the last three years (from 05/2013 to 07/2016), faces a high terrorist threat and further terrorist attacks may be repeated.

The developments are worrying and it is not possible to ensure that the current situation will not affect the safety of Cypriot citizens visiting the country.

Cypriot citizens are requested to avoid crowded places and mass gatherings in Turkey. Moreover, they are encouraged to keep abreast of local and international media coverage (especially from the Internet) of events and to follow the safety instructions of the Turkish Authorities.

Please note that due to the absence of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not able to provide direct consular assistance to Cypriot citizens who are visiting this country.

Cypriots are also informed that, as citizens of the EU and in the absence of Cypriot diplomatic missions in the visiting country, they have the right (under Article 23 of the Treaty of Lisbon) to receive consular protection from any diplomatic mission (Embassy or Consulate) of an EU Member State.

For further information please visit the relevant European Commission website:

Dr Soteris Kefalas published the following booksDr Soteris Kefalas is among the most reputable authors in Cyprus, specialized in tourism, hotel and hospitality management. As a researcher, he participated in numerous international conferences and he wrote many books. Through his books, Dr Soteris Kefalas aims at formulating thoughts, proposals and views as to what should be the policies and competencies in connection with the Hotel and Catering Industry of Cyprus.

Dr Soteris Kefalas published the following books:

  1. The Innovation in Hotel and Food Service Industry in Cyprus

The book consists of 13 chapters. All the major problems that the tourist industry faces are examined, with the exemption of the first chapter, which examines the tourist industry of the island in general. Many of the chapters are case studies (Organizational Culture Management, Energy Environmental Management Program, How productivity is monitored in a Hotel, ISO 9002, Food Poisoning Outbreaks in a Hotel, Restaurant Operations, etc).  The aim is for the readers to use the specific book as a framework for further empirical research or to assess their enterprise and reorganize an organization in order to deal successfully with operational problems.

  1. The Expectations and Perceptions of Guests regarding the Quality Service of Four-Star Hotels of Cyprus

As a contribution to the strive of improving service quality, the purpose of this book is to offer insights about the level of service quality, and eventual shortfalls, among the four-star hotels in Cyprus as perceived by the tourists experiencing this service.  Furthermore, the book tests the hypothesis that there is a strong link between customers’ perception of the service quality of a specific company and their subsequent willingness to recommend it further.

  1. The Operation of an Organized Complex of Hotel Apartment

Nevertheless there are many outstanding textbooks in the hotel management field that deal with significant departments of operations, particularly housekeeping, front office and food and beverage, however, there are very few that try to treat in a balanced and in – depth way each department in the hotel. Exactly these deficiencies are detected and analyzed through this book. This book provides significant contribution to the literature theory and practice of running a well Organized Hotel Apartment Complex. The author examines in detail how the Organized Hotel Apartment Complex is operated effectively and efficiently.

  1. Restaurant Menu Planning, Design and Analysis

The menu is the primary marketing tool used to communicate with customer. The products it offers or does not offer are a primary influence on the potential customer’s desire to patronize the food service operation. Likewise, the way in which the menu presents the products and services will influence which ones will be ordered by the customers. Throughout this book, the author emphasizes the importance of proper menu planning; it should receive high priority.

  1. Restaurant Feasibility Study

Perhaps the most important decision a hospitality manager can make is whether or not to go into business in the first place. Oddly, this decision has often been dictated by vague impressions and educated guesses. But carefully and thoughtfully conducted feasibility studiesPerhaps the most important decision a hospitality manager can make is whether or not to go into business in the first place.

  1. The Operation of the Purchasing Department

This book is intended for hospitality professionals interested in methods of increasing buying  power, as well as students and instructors. In writing this book, the purpose has been to cover innovative techniques available to hospitality purchasers, including cost-plus and forward contracting.

The Department of Antiquities expresses sincere appreciation to Christakis Hadjiprodromou for his donationThe Department of Antiquities expresses sincere appreciation to Christakis Hadjiprodromou for his donation

The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Mr Christakis Hadjiprodromou for his kind donation of a prehistoric clay figurine. The figurine was part of Mr Hadjiprodromou’s declared private collection that was kept in his house in Ammochostos (Famagusta) prior to the Turkish invasion in 1974. As a result of the invasion, Mr Hadjiprodromou’s residence was pillaged, and his collection was looted, its objects scattered around the world. The specific figurine was repatriated from Munich in August 2015 along with other antiquities that were in the illegal possession of Aydin Dikmen, after a long legal battle.

The figurine dates to the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1650 BC) and it represents an infant in a cradle. It is adorned with painted motifs and it belongs to a rare category of figurines.

It will be included in an exhibition organized by the Department of Antiquities to be inaugurated on September 23, 2016, within the framework of a research programme (SPAUT, Saving Prehistoric Antiquities under Threat). After the exhibition the figurine will be on permanent display in the Cyprus Museum.
