In between the village and the church of Saint Georgiou is the church of Saint Andronikou and Immortality that is a building of the 16th century.

East of the village is the church of Saint Georgiou of River. The church was built in the 16th century and has one and unique window in the holy room, in form of Cross and with very beautiful sculpture.

The large water tank (Havouza), which is located just above the central square of the village, was built in 1905 and in the first years it was supplied with water by the well located at the square of the village.

In 1920, a woman named Christina dreamed the existence of an underground water channel and this led to the discovery of water in the area of the ancient underground channel, which in turn resulted in the construction of the second water tank. Since then, the two water tanks have been supplied with water by the channel.

THE PICTURE OF THE THEFT

Dear friends, dear Madame Ambassador,

I would like to thank you, on behalf of the Cyprus Green Party, for this opportunity to address an issue that is very dear to our hearts and needs to be attended to very urgently. This is the ongoing quarrying of the Pentadaktylos Mountain Range.

Pentadaktylos is the limestone Mountain Range that separates the Mesaoria plains from the shores of Keryneia. It is engraved in our legends and history, being the natural fortress and observation point from dangers from our Northern shores.

Unfortunately this beautiful mountain range is in danger of being irreversibly damaged. Scientists  and Environmentalists  have warned that if the uncontrolled quarrying of the Pentadaktylos mountain does not stop, soon the five peaks will start to disappear one by one. Mr Orhan Aydeniz, chairman of the Cyprus Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion and Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats, told the “Cyprus Today” newspaper in November 2013 (and I quote): “The situation is critical. There are currently 17 stone quarries operating across the Five Finger Mountains in an unorganised, unsystematic manner… We can talk for another 20 years but soon we will have no mountain left. There won’t be five or four fingers left on the mountain. There will be nothing”.

Environment Commissioner Ms Ioanna Panayiotou says that information she has received indicate that there are currently 39 stone quarries operating on Pentadaktylos, not 17. According to a news report published in the Havadis newspaper, there are 40 quarries in the northern part of Cyprus covering a total area of 2 million 651 thousand square meters.

Irreversible harm is being done to the terrain and many species of flora and fauna are being destroyed, which are included in the European Habitats Directive. There are various species that are included in the Red Codex of endangered endemic species of Cyprus. Οne of the plants is the national plant of Cyprus, the cyclamen. Another is the extremely rare and very beautiful Ophrys Kotschyi or Cyprus Bee-orchid.

Besides destroying the mountains, trees and the environment as a whole, the dust particles from the quarries that are close to residential areas cause difficulties in breathing and other health problems. Many houses in the surrounding areas are also damaged during explosions, which break their windows and create cracks in the walls.

The Pentadaktylos mountain range was included in the project for the management and protection of potential “NATURA 2000” sites in the occupied part of Cyprus which was financed by the European Commission in the framework of Council Regulation 389/2006, with the consent of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. 5 types of ecosystems according to the 92/43/EC Directive were identified here. 16 endemic species that are not found anywhere else in the world were identified. There are many fauna species in the area, 30 of which are identified in the Annex of the 79/409/EC Directive. 72 migratory birds have been sighted in the area and in all some 160 species that are internationally protected or endemic or rare or endangered species have been identified in this particular area.

In my personal opinion, the ecological destruction is already irreparable. The tragic consequences of quarrying have already appeared through the loss of vital habitats and rare species of flora and fauna are threatened with complete extinction. Certain species are unique and we get to see them only at the Pentadaktylos mountain range. The repousse of the terrain is irreversibly changing and many species of flora and fauna which can be found in the Pentadaktylos mountain range and which are also included in the European Direction for habitats are totally destroyed.

In view of the above, there is a need for immediate action to protect this unique environmental site. I therefore strongly urge you to exert your influence so that there is an immediate termination of the illegal quarrying of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, in line with European and international environmental principles.

Dear friends. This island as a whole is our common heritage. It is where we were born and raised, where our ancestors lived and prospered and worked so that their children could also live and prosper. We need to do the same now. We need to safeguard this island for the generations to come, that will hopefully be born and raised in a unified island, where everybody can reside and work freely and just be. I hope that you can all share this vision with me and will help in saving Cyprus for generations to come.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation successfully participated in the recent Birmingham Wedding Show between 28/2-2/3/2014.

The CTO stand hosted Cypriot hoteliers while more of the Cyprus private hotel businesses, Tourism Boards and Municipalities from the regions of Pafos, Lemesos and Ammochostos attended the fair.

The presence of the CTO was enhanced by the traditional Cyprus wedding delights loukoumi/pastichi and the wedding cake, a sponsorship of Confectioneries and Bakeries in Cyprus. Additional give aways like the wedding bonbonieres, the ‘Marry Me in Cyprus’ cotton bags and the heart keyrings enhanced Cyprus presence.

The UK market is a priority market with 50% market share and which amounts to 4000 wedding ceremonies. As for the year 2013, due to the economic crisis and the fact it was considered by the British as an unlucky year to marry, no further increases are to mention. However, 2014 and 2015 will be a lot more promising.

According to Antigoni Kapodistria, CTO Tourism Officer, in charge of the wedding tourism in Cyprus, and from data retrieved by the municipalities and the Tour Operators, Cyprus still has a dominant position in the wedding industry compared to other European and Mediterranean destinations. Cyprus remains the number one preferred wedding and honeymoon destination for the British couples. Some of the reasons are the direct flights to and from the island especially from the regional airports, the guaranteed sunshine, the lower cost for combining wedding and holidays for the couple and its guests, the variety of wedding venues out of Town Hall, the organizational expertise of the local wedding planners and the municipality wedding officers, the simple procedures and the identification of Cyprus with Aphrodite, which has made it widely recognized as the ‘Island of Love’.

Annita Demetriades, CTO Strategy Dpt Director, points out that wedding tourism is a major economic source for both the Municipalities and the tourism and greater industry of Cyprus in general. The main goal is to intensify actions towards the development and the promotion of this special product in both priority markets like the UK, Israel, Lebanon and Russia and in new non-European promising ones.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation promotes the wedding tourism through the participation at specialized wedding shows, the hosting of press – familiarization trips and important personas, the online advertising campaigns through the CTO specialized webpage www.marrymecyprus.com , the cooperation with specialized Tour Operators, the advertising in print media etc.

Moreover, the CTO is enabling the registration of the Pancyprian Wedding Planners Association with the goal to organise, develop, protect and promote the Cyprus wedding product and businesses.

Following the very positive reviews from international media on their debut album “Grippy Grappa”, Monsieur Doumani have received another great distinction from the acclaimed British magazine ‘Songlines’, which specializes in ‘World Music’.

The awards, voted by theSonglines readers and the general public, endeavor to celebrate and acknowledge the wealth of musical talent around the world. All the nominated artists have had albums reviewed in Songlines during 2013. The awards consist of four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Newcomer. The nominees are the top four in each category from the public vote. The winners of each category will be announced in the magazine’sJune issue (#100).

Monsieur Doumani’s “Grippy Grappa”, which was awarded as ‘Top of the World’ album in a previous issue of the magazine, now gives the group a nomination for ‘Best Newcomer’.

Monsieur Doumani willcelebrate this achievement by giving a free concert next Sunday 16 March 2014 (9:30pm) at theNew Division Bar in Nicosia.

Monsieur Doumani was formed in 2011 in Nicosia by Antonis Antoniou (tzouras), Angelos Ionas (guitar) and Demetris Yiasemides (wind instruments). Although each member of Monsieur Doumani comes from a different musical background all three are influenced by Cypriot folklore on various levels.

They focus on rearranging Cypriot traditional songs adding their own particular color to the sound and feeling of the songs. They also compose their own songs in the Cypriot dialect, which are inspired by contemporary Cypriot society, as for example the recent financial crisis that hit the island and the corrupted political system.

For our 40st anniversary, our daughter decided to send us on cruise from Sydney to Southampton to then visit my sister in London and return via plane. Everything was a surprise, in detail prepared by our lovely daughter. We only found out where we were heading on our way to the cruise ship. A lovely surprise since we’ve relocated 30 years ago and we only manage to see London a few times because of the distance and the fortune spent each time.

The cruise has been magnificent and without any doubt an experience that we would love to repeat. We had a wonderful time on the Queen Mary 2, there was a lot to do, with so many lectures to go to on a variety of different subjects. The entertainment suited all different tastes and the Queen Mary singers and dancers were fabulous. We were served by Frederic; Adrian and Marianne at dinner, they were so entertaining. The food was excellent also. If you want a nice relaxing fortnight go to New York and back on the Queen Mary 2. The ships company will certainly look after you well. We arrived in Southampton and we already had a chauffeur waiting for us at the terminal. Our daughter, Laura, took care of everything in the smallest. The driver was very polite, helped us with the bags, and took us to my sister’s house on the shortest route possible. Lots of things have changed, but I can still remember London as if I never left. We spent a lovely time with Lilly and was nice to meet the two new additions to our family. Upon our return, this time by plane, we had allocated the same driver from the same Heathrow Airport taxi company to ensure transfer, which we found rather pleasant as it gave us peace of mind we will get to the airport safely and on time. It was a beautiful fulfilling experience and we will definitely return.

The Dro.Me.A. Racing running team had a dynamic presence in all events at the 2014 Limassol Marathon, while many runners beat their personal best times.

In the Marathon race, Dro.Me.A. Racing’s (and GSP’s) elite runner, Kassahun Jebel finished 3rd in the international category and 1^st in the national championships, at 2H 38’26’’. Despite a very challenging race day, Jebel made an exceptional effort to overcome his pains and aches in order to finish 3^rd while he underwent medical care following the event due to exhaustion. At the same event, Dro.Me.A. Racing’s (and GSO’s) athlete, Charalambos Ioannou finished 6^th in the international category and 2^nd in the national championships at 2H 48’37’’.

Dro.Me.A. Racing’s runners attained notable achievements in the half-marathon as well. In the women’s event, Elpida Christodoulidou (also of GSP), Zarina Mentayeva and Elia Ioannou (also of GSP) placed 4^th (in 1H 27’38’’), 5^th (in 1H 27’47’’) and 9^th (in 1H 33’51’’), respectively. Furthermore, in the men’s event, David Branfoot finished 5^th at an exceptional time of 1H 13’35’’.

Dro.Me.A. Racing’s president, Stelios Ioannou, congratulated the club’s runners who excelled, while stressing the remarkable participation of the team’s runners in the Marathon, half-marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 1 km children’s race. ‘We are delighted to see that the training offered by our club generates such results and has a positive impact in attracting new runners of all levels and all ages,’ Ioannou said. ‘It is a great pleasure see our runners participate and enjoy running events while at the same time reaching their individual goals. More importantly, we need to congratulate, once more, our young runners who took part in the 1000 meters, thus, promoting the message that sport is a source of health, happiness and entertainment. Finally, I would like to emphasise that the work done in our academies in Limassol is exceptional and the children really have made an impact with their participation in Limassol.’

The A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia is now open and houses the A. G. Leventis Foundation’s three Collections, realising Anastasios G. Leventis’ vision of making available to the public the treasures of European art and culture that he collected during his lifetime.

The Gallery was designed by the award-winning British architectural firm Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, in collaboration with J. & A. Philippou in Cyprus. The construction was undertaken by the Iacovou – GCC Joint Venture, and the project was managed by RESDE Development and Project Management S.A.

The Paris Collection includes works by important European artists of the 17th century to the 20th and owes its name to A. G. Leventis’ Parisian apartment, where it was housed for more than half a century, away from the public eye. Dr Myrto Hatzaki is the Curator of the Paris Collection.

The Greek Collection includes works by artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. Anastasios Leventis bought the core of the Greek Collection from Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza in 1973, and it was later enriched by the A. G. Leventis Foundation. Evita Arapoglou is the Curator of the Greek Collection.

The Cyprus Collection was created after the death of Anastasios G. Leventis and includes works of art by the first generation of Cypriot artists from 1900 until the foundation of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, as well as some by artists of the second generation who explored similar themes as their predecessors. Dr Eleni Nikita is the curator of the Cyprus Collection.

The three Collections include works by such significant artists as Canaletto, Boucher, Fragonard, Corot, Boudin, Renoir, Monet, Signac, Chagall, Vryzakis, Volanakis, Rallis, Moralis, Tsarouchis, Ghika, Kissonerghis, Diamantis and Kanthos.

The museological approach and the presentation of the Collections connect the art of the past with the technology of the future, including interactive digital labels and touch screens that help the visitor to tour the museum. A particularly innovative detail is the design of the special partitions that protect the more sensitive works from constant exposure to light.

The modern sculptural lighting by the internationally renowned Michael Anastassiades unites the Gallery space with the selection of Louis XVI furniture and the Meissen and Sèvres porcelain. We also see a reflection of A. G. Leventis’ apartment in Paris in the wood-panelled room that was transported in its entirety from the apartment and has been re-erected in the Gallery, transporting visitors to 1960s Paris, where the valuable collection was original housed: a collection that now belongs, as was his wish, to his fellow countrymen.

Off-site parking areas are normally minutes away to and from the airport and for the convenience of their clients most of them offer shuttle services.

P0/P1 parking-Classic

This parking area is next to terminal 2 which is a walking distance to the airport. It’ll take you up to 2 minutes to the airport terminal.

P2 Parking- Low cost plus

This parking area slightly affordable and is not far from the terminal. It’ll take you less than 5 minutes to reach the airport terminal or from the airport terminal to the parking lot.

P3 parking –Low cost

This is the most affordable and is known as the best priced parking area at the airport. It’ll take you less than 10 minutes to walk to the airport terminal. If you don’t mind walking, then this is arguably the best ad most economic parking space available at the airport. It’s also the best option if you are after a long stay parking.

If you don’t want to rent a car at the airport, then other options still exist like; the taxi service. There is a taxi rank in front of the terminal, which you can call at any time of the day (as its 24 hour service) or visit personally at the airport. Another existing option is the bus service. You’ll find one bus line. These buses will take you to the city center. With a bus it’ll take you about 20 minutes to reach Faro. Once you are in the city, you can now take other busses to different places in the Algarve.

Facilities include available accessible washrooms, charging stations for electric wheelchairs at departure gates, ramps to allow a person on a wheelchair to enter or exit the buses and additional assistive services, meeting European Regulation 1107/2006 concerning the right of disabled travellers.

In 2007, the Cyprus Parliament approved and introduced the use of the European Blue Badge for parking at designated places for the disabled, available all over the island, both in public roads and public parking areas. The authority responsible for issuing the Blue Badge is the Service for the Care and Rehabilitation of the Disabled, part of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. Most Cyprus’ towns are fairly accessible with a wheelchair but much work is yet to be carried out to improve infrastructure.  A person using a wheelchair is advised to be accompanied by an able person for assistance in inaccessible areas.

Transportation around the island can be arranged if prior notice is given to the transport companies. Special buses are also available with low gradient ramps, safety belts and a/c and so are special taxis that may carry a person who is seating on a wheelchair.
