CVAR
The CVAR is the home of the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation, a non-governmental, not-forprofit organisation that provides a platform for the exploration of Cyprus’s cultural heritage. Along with the Centre’s project, SHARE (Sharing History, Art, Research and Education), the Foundation highlights the island’s multicultural heritage and promotes the values of peaceful coexistence and understanding amongst the communities of Cyprus.

The CVAR is comprised of a four-storey exhibition area, a research centre, a conference hall, a café, a roof terrace lounge and a Gift shop. Located on Ermou Street, within the historic walled city of Nicosia, the building was originally an Ottoman-era khan, which was converted into a flourmill in 1953. In 2014, it was restored to house the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR). Special care was taken so that the Centre would blend in with its historic surroundings and invite the visitor to walk down memory lane.

The church of Saint Marina is built in the 16th century. The initial church was small, built from the ruins of rather Byzantine church. In the 17th century the church was extended to the west. ” Αlmyras”. A rich locality for production of copper
The ” Almyras” of Ayia Varvara was discovered in 1982 and represents the unique ancient unit of complete treatment for production of copper that has been found up to now in Cyprus. Between the years 1988 and 1998 twelve excavations have taken place. The “Almyras” is found in the valley of Sia, in a region with a history of four thousands years in the production of copper.

All the activities that have relation with the production of copper at “Almyras”, they are dated in the Cyprus-Archaic season in 600 BC, in the Cyprus-Classic around in 400 BC and in the Cyprus-Hellenistic period around in 150 BC and they have been revealed, a vein of mineral with remains of mine, two furnaces for the mineral as well as various types of fusion furnaces of copper. The light candles that have been found around the furnaces testify that they were working during the night. The written ceramics, the two earthen anthropomorphous figurines and the statuette of a ram from limestone, show that at this place certain events of adoration took place. Some researches were necessary to be done in order to understand the technology for the production of copper and to confirm its important role in the social-economic system of the ancient Cyprus.

What the disabled visitor needs to know about Cyprus

Accesible Tourism in Cyprus
A number of facilities are available to visitors with special access needs who wish to visit Cyprus. Some hotel establishments provide a range of facilities to meet special needs and requirements. However, accessibility facilities/infrastructure for disabled vary from accommodation establishment to accommodation establishment. Although the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) attempts to provide accurate, complete and current information from reliable sources it accepts no responsibility or liability for the content, truth, accuracy, reasonability, reliability and completeness of provided information. We strongly recommend contacting the accommodation establishment to ascertain that the establishment provides requested facilities/infrastructure, prior to any binding reservation.

Both Larnaka and Pafos international airports are accessible to visitors with all kinds of access needs. Facilities include available accessible washrooms, charging stations for electric wheelchairs at departure gates, ramps to allow a person on a wheelchair to enter or exit the buses and additional assistive services, meeting European Regulation 1107/2006 concerning the right of disabled travellers.

In 2007, the Cyprus Parliament approved and introduced the use of the European Blue Badge for parking at designated places for the disabled, available all over the island, both in public roads and public parking areas. Most Cyprus’ towns are fairly accessible with a wheelchair but much work is yet to be carried out to improve infrastructure.  A person using a wheelchair is advised to be accompanied by an able person for assistance in inaccessible areas.

Transportation around the island can be arranged if prior notice is given to the transport companies. Special buses are also available with low gradient ramps, safety belts and a/c and so are special taxis that may carry a person who is seating on a wheelchair.

The Medieval farmhouse of Aikaterine Kornaro at Potamia

According to historical sorces the family of Aikaterine Kornaro owned sugarmills in the Limassol area of Episkopi. Her arrival to Cyprus was not planed. She married King Jacob the B’ because this served the interests of Venice and its plans to occupy Cyprus. The 14th century King Peter the B’ had a summer house built in the north west of Potamia village, on the right bank of Gialias river. The medieval farmhouse was run by verious owners.

Part of the building was a chapel dedicated to Saint Nikolas, and the house itself later became Royal residence for Aikaterine Kornaro. During the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, the building was handed over to a turkish wealthy family.

In the years that followed the building was used as storehouse, stable and military installations for the National Guard. In 1996 after an earthquake a big part of the building collapsed. The residence is often described as a pleasant  Royal summer palace with beautiful gardens. Queen Aikaterine could easily supervise the fields around the residence. Aikaterine Kornaro also used the residence to receive distinguished guests. Other sources claimed that she also used it for secret meetings with her lover.

Aikaterine was loved by her people. During her reign her palace became a cultural center for famous poets, painters and music composers. Renaissance painters immortalised her beauty in numerous portraits. She was a very intelligent and dynamic person.

The interests of Venice that brought her to Cyprus also made her resign. On February 14th the Qeen dressed in black and accompanied by members of her court and their spouses, left Cyprus. From the moment she left Nicosia she kept crying and with her the people also saw her off in tears. (According to Voustronios)

Best Shisha Bars in Cyprus

What Makes For An Ideal Shisha Smoking Experience?

With the ever-increasing popularity of hookah smoking, more and more shisha bars are being constructed worldwide whether they are the traditional type or a hybrid with electronic versions. This then begs the question: how should a customer know which businesses to flock to, and which to avoid? A shisha bar earns a memorable reputation not only because of the shisha that it offers, but also because of the atmosphere that it provides. Of course, many are renowned for their cuisine and cocktails as well. This article aims to examine just three of the most widely acclaimed traditional shisha/hookah locations in Cyprus, and to examine what makes them popular and/or unique as businesses.

  • As a small disclaimer it perhaps should be noted that any man-made compilation, which attempts to list a region’s best lounges or restaurants, would be subjective.

o   Each person has a unique set of preferences, true; but surely these locations collected below will have features that appeal to all tastes and appetites.

Dubai Coffee Shop – Larnaca

This location in Larnaca boasts delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, fine teas, and (of course) an impressive selection of shisha. A perfect place to meet some friends and watch a football game over a buzz, The Dubai Coffee Shop notifies its Facebook followers about when they are showing particular matches, allowing for regular fans to come in and cheer communally. At the same time, because of its large size this is a place to which a person could retreat to gather his or her thoughts and enjoy the traditional Arabic music that fills the bar.

Spondas – Paphos

Stationed just a two minute walk away from the harbor towards bar street, Spondas is the self-proclaimed one and only authentic traditional shisha bar in Paphos. The bar offers over 25 refreshing flavors, fruit and otherwise, to satisfy every palate. Uniquely, Spondas even offers shisha that is void of nicotine, providing their customers with a more health conscious option. Prices may vary from around ten euros to twenty. In addition to hookah, customers may enjoy the cocktail bar, fully stocked with the finest ingredients, and manned by the friendliest bar staff around.

Hookah Cafe Restaurant – Nicosia

Although this business only accepts cash, the prices are more than reasonable, allowing customers from all socio-economic standings to stop by for a quick buzz and a bite to eat. This is a fast food shisha experience, but with all of the elegance of a high profile lounge. To compliment their hookah, The Hookah Cafe Restaurant offers live DJ music, as well as diverse food menus, which offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Much of the cuisine is inspired by Italian culinary traditions, and this seems fitting given the large outdoor seating area, which might remind you of a sunny plaza in Sienna. As far as the shisha goes, the quality is of the highest degree, and the flavors are plentiful. They particularly encourage their first-time visitors to try out one of their highly acclaimed house mixes.

Talas Church Museum - Holy church of saint Aikaterine
The Church of Agia Ekateriny is of the single-aisle type with a dome. Its external measurements are 18,70 X 8,05 metres without the apse. Today’s church is the result of an expansion and a retrofit of an older church that was arch-covered and had a lesser length, a part of which is embodied in the west arch of the church. To make the retrofit of the initial church, the apse and a part of the north and south walls were demolished and the single aisle with the dome was added.

A segment of the original church measuring 8,05 X 8,70 is extant. In the centre of the west wall stands the original gate, while the south gate of the initial church was walled up and two new ones were opened in the south wall, one in the west and the other in the east of the initial entrance. The church has a small, rectangular window in the north wall and a narrow gap for illumination in the semicircular apse. There also are four small windows in the dome. The dome is relatively large, while the south and north arcs -that along with the arches support the dome internally -do not appear externally either as semi-circles or pediments as usual. Instead they end in a straight segment that rises as the Greek capital letter Π (P) in the south and north wall.

The original church seems to have been decorated with frescos. Out of these frescos one can distinguish, under the whitewash of the western wall, pieces of a large representation of the Second Coming. The original church was built in the 15th century and took its present form in the middle of the 16th century.

Nicosia re –discovered

Having left the world famous Haman in Old Nicosia around 2pm there is still time to enjoy the late autumn sun. November temperatures in Cyprus are quite remarkable even in November.  After an unforgettable massage made more appealing by the knowledge that the treatments afforded my wife (Michelle), attained for her, the unique satisfaction brought on by skin exfoliation, I decide to reflect on this City that I have grown to love.

Almost all great cities exude ambience: Nicosia is no exemption. Paris is romantic, Venice haunting. Nicosia is perhaps a combination of the two yet intensified by a sense of “bitter sweet” given its sad past and current division.

As I a look around and soak up the atmosphere, what inspires me most is the resilience of the Greek Cypriot people undefeated in their determination to deliver good old fashioned hospitality ………. 18 months after a financial crisis that would have crushed most cities. A new dynamic has emerged witnessing the re- birth of Old Nicosia.

Our stroll takes us to the thriving Ledra Street. A place alive with bustling cafes and craft shops. Alongside traditional Cypriot Tavernas is a rich assortment of international cuisine. From Armenian delicacies to “Rustico Italian” with most eateries providing an al fresco option.; as a Londoner we regard this as a luxury reserved mainly for summer, Nearby, we tasted specially prepared cheeses and dishes dazzling even Michelle`s discerning pallet. Later we sampled the most incredible fig chutney at the trendy Mouton restaurant which as places go is “the piece de resistance”.

Too full to venture elsewhere, I decided to defer a trip to the Archbishops Palace and Museum until the following day.  Michelle is a great fan of Byzantine art. If the art proves as evocative as the exhibits in the Leventis Gallery, we are in for a treat.

We end up at the Hilton in Archbishop Makarios 111 Avenue only to discover, in the bar area, a wonderful two piece jazz ensemble playing my kind of music. The singer accompanied by a talented saxophonist round off the night with a rendition of “My Funny Valentine”. My wife looks at me with romance in her eyes ……. not bad after 26 years of marriage.

I believe Nicosia has turned the corner and we can all be optimistic about its future.

To the thousands of Greek Cypriots in London, I say. “You don’t know what you’re missing”!!!!!!
